Luther Vandross' current double-platinum album "Dance With My Father" has produced another hit single to follow-up the Grammy winning title track. TAXI members (and Country music fans) will recognize "Buy Me A Rose" — which Kenny Rogers took to Number One on the Country charts a few years ago — as the latest effort from Luther to hit the charts.

In just two weeks of release, the song has shot to #14 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary radio charts, reaching "Most Added" and "Greatest Gainer" status in radio industry trade bible Radio & Records.

TAXI members Erik Hickenlooper and Jim Funk (whose original publishing deal which led to all this success came as a result of their TAXI membership, of course) were excited to learn that Luther would be doing his take on their song. Then thrilled when they heard it was being selected as a single.

"It's an honor to have one of the world's greatest voices singing our song," says Erik. "Plus, we're really pulling for Luther in his recovery. It was great to see him on the Grammys last month." he says, referring to Vandross' life-threatening stroke and subsequent coma.

Jim and Erik's simple original demo of the song was done on an 8-track machine with one mic, in the bedroom of an old farmhouse. This was the version that got it all started for them. More proof that it's the song that counts, not the recording. Listen to the original demo here (links at the top of this page).

All of us at TAXI are wishing Luther the best, and pulling for Erik and Jim, too, as their song makes a second run at being a hit in a completely different market.
