James Eddy Exon

James Eddy Exon’s musical career began when he got tall enough to see the top of James Eddy Sr’s pedal steel guitar in the 50’s. The 60’s began with little Jimmy in his cowboy outfit singing Hank Williams songs in talent shows, ended with the realization the other guys in his Dad’s band were getting paid to play, and did an about face with the ear opening experience of hearing James Jamerson’s Motown bass lines for the first time. When the 70’s arrived, he became a fixture on the Sunset Blvd music scene, launching a long career as a Los Angeles based bass player, recording, touring, and sharing the stage with a long list of LA’s finest. An eclectic journey spanning Dick Dale, Lorretta Lynn, Eddie Van Halen, Robben Ford, and the dubious distinction of being first call for a never-ending string of Elvis impersonators. By the 80’s, he had moved on to writing, producing, and managing numerous jazz artists such as Art Blakey, Jon Hendricks, and Maynard Ferguson, with whom he produced a series of 5 albums that garnered critical acclaim, award nominations, and numerous appearances on billboards’ jazz charts. His song Watcha’ Thinkin’ made Billboard’s top 10 jazz fusion chart, and was performed on the Arsenio Hall show, and Late Night with David Letterman. This century, he returns to his country roots with a timely old school/new school perspective.
