After earning their first #1 Billboard rank with the acclaimed 2022 release of Outside Spectrum (topping the Blues Albums Chart in August 2022) Chicago Roots Rock band The Empty Pockets kick it up a notch with their next full length studio album. Gotta Find the Moon is twelve new original songs and two outstanding covers recorded in London, England at the best recording studio in the world… the one and only Abbey Road Studios.
“Making music in that space is a literal dream come true.” says guitarist Josh Solomon.
“Singing into the same microphone Paul McCartney once sang into melted my brain a little bit… and that feeling also brought out the absolute best performances from the whole band,” adds keyboardist and vocalist Erika Brett.
The husband and wife fronted quartet release their new LP in September, fully anticipating charting once again on the strength of the band’s loyal fanbase and international touring.
More ambitious than past releases, Gotta Find the Moon is 14 delicately crafted tracks, widely varied in genre, arrangement and lyric. The album stays true to the band’s classic four-piece rock setup also featuring Nate Bellon on bass and Adam Balasco on drums.
Songs like “Make it Through” and “I Put Your Name In a Song” with special guest nylon-string guitarist Peter White, are intimate and revealing, with delicious and unusual melodies and progressions
The Empty Pockets are at the peak of their musical skills here, with complex and challenging rhythms in “Slow Down or You’re Gone” and “Hell-uv-a Day.”
After years of touring with folk rock legend Al Stewart, the band’s songwriting has started to draw from history with groovy and unique numbers like “Typhoid Mary” and “Unknown Unknowns.”
Musicianship wins out as heavy handed effects and studio trickery are eschewed and ignored. Instead, great performances and strong songwriting is the focus, giving the album a visceral, in-the-moment quality that cannot be faked.
The Empty Pockets are a live band at heart, and it shows, as their work embraces those perfect imperfections.
Gotta Find the Moon is released world wide on September 8th.
