The Aphids

Inspired by the grunge movement of the 90s and their love of classic power pop bands such as The Beatles and The Kinks (among others), The Aphids hit the Orange County, California indie rock scene with a burst of pure melodic fury. Following a gig by the band at legendary OC nightspot The Coach House, the LA Times opined that “The Aphids’ opening set reminded one that any motivated garage band can have its moment of ragged, three-chord glory.” While not exactly a rave, the band was heartened by the coverage nonetheless, although, as lead singer Jay Aphid noted, “some of those songs had four chords.” So much for the press…
Buoyed by their initial forays into the public eye, The Aphids turned to the task of translating their high-energy musical concoctions into releasable recordings. This turned out to be easier said than done -while the band may have purveyed the garage rock ethos live, in the studio it strove for perfection; lacking an endless source of funds to attain this magical goal, The Aphids’ first attempt at recording their songs was not successful. The band then focused once again on its live act, playing in clubs until ready to take another crack at recording.
By the time 2025 rolled around, The Aphids were back in action. After a few casual live appearances, the group once again turned its attention towards producing recordings that did justice to the band's music. This time around, The Aphids cut the Gordian knot between writing and recording their songs by the simple expedient of acquiring their own studio. At long last they found themselves able to put the finishing touches on songs old and new alike.
The group plans to initially release a collection of its early garage rock offerings, with more recordings to follow, as well as a return to touring. And, these days, some of the songs even have five chords …
