For too long, Skinny has suffered from the constraints of “genre” and the pressures to conform to the whims of radio tastes. Shadowed by his 5 years in the United States Armed Forces, Skinny has always felt a need for rules and discipline to further himself and his career. By his very nature, Skinny is careful and meticulous with his creative output, which caused a conflict with the current fast-paced weekly music cycle.
“This album is a building block for what I’d like to do moving forward: create music that encompasses freedom. I want to make music that isn’t limited by the borders of genres or any form of classification. It’s just music in my mind.”
Cutting himself fully off social media, Skinny’s frustration found expression in poetry. In 2023, he published his first works, The Climb: A Book of Poems, which sparked a new beginning and newfound confidence in his musical journey.
Following another successful album in contemporary jazz, Skinny’s frustration with the constraints of the world he found himself in boiled over into his 5th studio album, THE MAN.
“When I’m working on an album, I do my best not to look back at what I’ve already done. I prefer to look forward and venture into unmarked territory. Is that the safest route? Certainly not. But ‘safe’ is predictable, and predictability is boring. And who wants to listen to boring music?”
Skinny continues to push his capabilities and musical boundaries, crafting tracks that are both cutting-edge and nostalgic, with subtle nods to his idols. THE MAN is Skinny’s most forward-thinking record yet, while respecting the giants whose shoulders he stands on.
