Helen Slator Young grew up singing in choirs and playing primarily Classical piano as well as rhythmic Latin pieces and show tunes. She graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies cum laude. Helen received the first arranging emphasis degree ever awarded. Her concentration in college was piano, and voice was her secondary field. While at UNT, Helen played in jazz big bands and sang in the Jazz Singers, a 20-voice 8-part vocal ensemble with a rhythm section. For many years, she has played classic rock with her husband, Holland Young.
Helen has written songs and instrumentals throughout her life. After a lengthy career in “day-jobs,” she has started writing and recording music again. Her styles vary from jazz, rock and pop to classically-inspired instrumentals. Some of her recordings can be found on YouTube at:
