Serena has been writing music since the age of six when she began having piano lessons. By the age of 18 she was gigging regularly and attained a distinction in piano to grade 8 standard (UK). Serena made the finals of the UK songwriting contest in 2009. Serena also holds a degree and a Masters in Music, Technology and Innovation from De Montfort University in Leicester, where she composed and produced experimental and electroacoustic music for multi channel speaker systems and also composed for voice. She mixed her performances live, sometimes across 150 speakers or more. Whilst studying in Leicester Serena collaborated and performed with various groups and artists including ‘The Voice’ finalist Sally Barker, artist-led music production company Bathysphere, and Riverdance singer Patrick Devine-Wright. She has also worked with the Birmingham Electroacoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST) as an electroacoustic composer studying under Professor Jonty Harrison, having her works performed as far afield as Montreal, Canada. Serena has also sung jazz with the Rutland Big Band, fronting weddings, charity fundraiser events and Christmas celebrations.
Using the production skills she learned from her music studies Serena recorded and co-produced her debut EP ‘Numb’, released in 2010. Single parenting and full time music teaching meant Serena had to shelve her own music for a few years, but now she is now 'back in the room' and writing songs and producing songs from her garden studio, a refurbished laundry block in the grounds of her rural home in Scotland.
Her songs have been compared to Kate Bush, Regina Spector and Tori Amos, although she can turn her hand to many styles and genres. Serena is currently working on an EP for release next year, although her main focus now is on her songwriting and she is looking to get publishing deals for her music, hence joining TAXI!
Also a BBC trained journalist, Serena spent a number of years as a radio and TV news presenter/reporter. Whilst working at Yorkshire TV, Serena anchored the evening news programme presenting alongside the late Richard Whiteley. She also co-hosted a TV game show with Carol Vorderman.
When Serena is not crafting new material in her studio you will find her in nature or by the sea walking her dogs, heading to the gym, or meditating. And she loves going to see live music too!
