It's your title! Yes, the seemingly insignificant title, or should I say the WRONG title can kill a deal before your song even gets heard!
Imagine that you work at a production music library and you're looking for new instrumental tracks. If you opened a file or popped in a CD from TAXI with 12 new songs to review, which would you listen to first?

If you answered, "None of the above," you'd be correct! And those are ACTUAL song titles!! They could be the greatest songs or tracks in the world, but who would ever know?
Here are five more titles:

Thunder Roads
Psychedelic Summer
Swampy's Blues
Creedence Rides Again
If you're trying to find new tracks for a music library that have a light, positive feeling, and organic/acoustic instrumentation, which would you check out first?
If you're a music supervisor and you need an instrumental track for a motorcycle scene with a bunch of Hell's Angels in it, which song would you choose?
If you're doing an indie feature film about two brothers who get lost on their way to Woodstock, which title would jump out at you?
If you're the video editor working on an episode of Gator Men, which title would get your attention?
If you're the music supe on a documentary about a guy who returns from the Vietnam War in 1970 and you need something that sounds like the classic Rock from that era, what would you choose?
Could This Be Why You Didn't Get the Placement?
How many times have your songs been forwarded by TAXI but you never heard from the listing company? Remember, we forward your material based on the music.
Maybe the music library owner that needed the music is listening to other songs or tracks first because the titles hint at what the music sounds like! And if they find what they're looking for before they get to yours, well... you know how that goes.
Good for Libraries,
Not So Much For Everything Else!
Before you start changing the titles of ALL of your song or tracks, consider this: Ad agencies often love to find super hip, independent bands and songwriters to use in their commercials. Music supervisors also love to champion obscure indie bands and artists that haven't been discovered by their peers yet.
So, giving your song or track a title that sounds like a title you'd use for a record is the rule of thumb for film, TV, ads, and trailers. Use the chorus lyric as your title, whenever possible. And if you're really lucky, maybe that will give some clues as to the type of music contained within.
Havana Nights is a great example of what could be a chorus lyric that also gives a hint about the type of music. I wouldn't worry about titles with clues THAT much for NON-library pitches, but I WOULD worry about the following!
This is Always a Bad Idea
Naming your songs like you would name a computer file is almost always a bad idea. It makes sense when you're in computer mode and naming the file for your own personal reasons, but it ends right there. Let's look at some examples again:

This one is may be great for your filing purposes, but not for the person on the receiving end!
Mix1Mastered
Mix 1 of what? This title is pretty meaningless to anybody but the creator, so who cares if it's mastered?
Unfinished++5-1+Final.mp3
Unless this song is about something is unfinished, this title makes it less than desirable. Even if it is about being "unfinished," this may still be a poor title choice! Would you want to use a song that remains unfinished?
Taxi Commercial Clip 0:30
This title might be good for the composer's filing purposes, but if you're the music supervisor at the ad agency, what does this title tell you? Not enough! Which commercial? What kind of music? Is it about a taxi, or is it music from TAXI?
Whatever it is, it's just plain wrong!
How Do Your Titles Stack Up?
Try this simple test. Comb through your favorite genre in this update of our Industry Listings and find five listings that appeal to you. Find a song or track in your catalog for each pitch. Analyze each title from the perspective of the people you will be pitching to most often. Are your titles as good as they need to be
If not, take the time to change them, especially if they sound like computer file names. Sometimes it's the little details that can make a big difference!

Submission Policies
- You must be a current member of TAXI to submit your material. If you're not already a member, click here to find out how to join.
- The Submission Fee is $5.00 per song for every listing (unless otherwise noted). Listings that ask for up to three songs per listing would be $5, $10, or $15 based on whether you are submitting 1, 2, or 3 songs to that listing.
- You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the proper amount of postage with each submission if you would like to receive a critique and/or have your tape/CD returned. Enclosing one SASE with a several submissions doesn't work. Multiple submissions go into a different bins or to different screeners as soon as we receive them, and are returned to you at different times.
- We notify you by postcard if forwarded for any listing--No SASE needed for forward notification.
- Late submissions slow everything down. We are very pleased to have significantly improved our listing turnaround time. We can't accept late submissions and stay efficient.
- You must use your official TAXI Music Submission Form with the BarCode information at the top. Roll up your burritos so that Bar Code is exposed and readable without having to unwrap or re-wrap your burrito. It's OK if your check covers the bar code, because we take it out before scanning the bar code anyway.
- Those of you who have seen the music room know what kind of volume we handle. All of these little rules help us to serve you better.

Place the submission form face-down with the top pointing away from you. Place the lyric sheets, envelopes, etc. on top of it in the same fashion. Place the cassette near the bottom of the sheets, and roll it all up from bottom to top. The end result will give you a tape burrito that will be 8 1/2 inches wide, and have the girth of a cassette. The submission form will end up on the outside, and your name and the listing number will be readily visible for our data entry people. No folding of anything! Please tuck your checks in the rubber bands so they are easily found without unraveling the whole enchilada.

REMEMBER TO PLEASE INCLUDE A SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE WITH YOUR SUBMISSION IF YOU WANT A CRITIQUE BACK.
CUSTOM CRITIQUES
If you have material you would like critiqued without responding to a specific listing, you've come to the right place. Fill out the submission form with the song title(s) and author(s) as usual, but in place of the listing number write "CUSTOM" in capital letters.
Please include a note specifying the aspects you would like the listener to address.
For example, some members like to have their craft (lyrics, rhyme, structure, etc.) closely critiqued. Others want to know for which genre their writing is best suited (sorry, but we can't recommend specific listings for you to pitch to). Still others want a review of their photos, bios, package, etc.
The submission fee is $20 per song. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and make sure to specify if you want the tape (or CD) back, or just a critique. Remember, these critiques are for your own edification and development and NOT targeted for a label or publisher, and therefore will not be forwarded.
