Adult Contemporary

NEW LISTING -- ADULT CONTEMPORARY SONGS with Male or Female Vocals and tons of Mainstream Pop Appeal are needed by the VP of A&R at a Major Record Label for a recently signed Male Artist that's working on his debut record. Female vocals are fine for this pitch, but please make sure your lyrics work from a Male perspective. They're eager to find hit-worthy, Mid-Tempo Songs that could be found on the same playlist as artists like Sam Smith, Adele, Hozier, etc., etc., etc. Quoting the source: "They want songs with tons of mainstream appeal (great structure, solid melodic transitions, and heartfelt conceptual lyrics that cover relatable themes.) This is a priority for the Label, so the bar is high for this. Stripped-down demos are fine as long as the performances shine." Please submit well-crafted, passionate songs with fresh, soulful melodies, relatable lyrics, and a big chorus that leaves the audience begging for more. This artist has a really impressive vocal range and control, so be sure your songs cater to his top-notch abilities. As mentioned in the quote, stripped-down demos are okay for this pitch. Your recording quality (even for stripped-down demos) needs to be clean, clear, well balanced, and good enough to represent your song well. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Label and must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Wednesday, August 19, 2015. TAXI #S150819AC

Americana
Return to List of Categories

CONTEMPORARY AMERICANA SONGS with Female Vocals are needed by the VP of A&R at a Major Record Label for a truly talented young act working on a brand new record. They want genre-bending, well-crafted, Mid-Tempo Songs that would appeal to the fans of acts like Romi Mayes, Baskery, Abalone Dots, etc., etc., etc. Please submit songs that are rhythmically and melodically compelling from beginning to end. If you blur the lines between Americana, Alt Americana, contemporary Country and Indie Folk, you're in the ballpark of what would appeal to this act. They're definitely genre-benders and blenders, and the end result has a cool factor that would appeal to radio and the mainstream audience. Some of their songs sound like Mumford and Sons got married to AbbaÉ imagine that! You'd be smart to have a really solid vocal performance to make it easy for the act to get excited about cutting your song. Engaging vocal harmonies will work really well for this pitch. Lyric themes can vary, but should be creative and have commercial appeal. Your recording quality needs to be clean, clear, well balanced, and good enough to represent your song well. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Label and must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Friday, August 7, 2015. TAXI #S150807AM

Please submit well-crafted Public Domain Covers that can put the audience in the Christmas/Holiday spirit, with a great overall performance that sounds really fresh and current. NEW LISTING -- CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY HITS with Male Vocals are needed by an extremely active, Nashville-based Music Publisher for a legendary Country Artist that’s working on a brand new album. Please review the following song references to get a general idea of the originality and hit-quality he needs:

“Shotgun Rider” by Tim McGraw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkpuLMsDn48

“I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCSMCgqlc-0

“Neon Light” by Blake Shelton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yTKBwoVKqE

Quoting the Publisher: “This is for an artist that was once part of a legendary Country Superstar Duo that is now pursuing a solo career. One of the best vocalists in Country music history with a wide range. He is used to singing smash hits and winning awards year in and year out, so only the absolute best of the best will do. Undeniable chart-toppers only! This artist has heard thousands of songs in his career, so the same old, same old simply won't cut it for this pitch. It's going to have to be a two out, ninth inning, game-winning home run kind of a song. Incredibly fresh and original ideas, melodies, and lyrics please. But not so ‘out there’ that it can't be a radio friendly, huge hit.”

You heard the man! Give him HIT Songs that are undeniably great, with fresh melodies, great hooks, and above all, a unique storyline that Nashville has yet to hear… or at least a new way of saying something we’ve heard before. Your chorus needs to be incredibly strong and ready for radio. You’d be wise to have a really solid vocal performance to help capture the attention of this Publisher and the artist. Your demo quality needs to be competitive with songs being pitched on the Row.

The specific deal points will be negotiated on a song-by-song basis directly with the Publisher. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Publisher - No full critiques. CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY SONGS with a "Rock Edge" and Male Vocals are needed by a Major Nashville Record Label for a talented artist whose first album went to # 2 on the charts. He's currently working on his sophomore album. They want well-crafted, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs that would appeal to the fans of Jake Owen, Kris Allen, Zac Brown Band, etc., etc., etc. Quoting the source: "Songs should lyrically have a bit of attitude, swagger, and confidence. Nothing too clichŽ, with an overload of typical Country imagery. Songs should have engaging melodies and some muscle in the instrumentation to support this artist's strong vocal ability." Please submit radio-worthy songs that have just enough of a Rock edge to appeal to wider audience than just Country. Songs should have all the appeal of Country hits, with fresh inviting melodies, attention-grabbing hooks throughout all sections of the song, and a great big, hit Chorus. You'd be wise to have a really strong vocal performance to get them excited about cutting your song. Simple acoustic (guitar or piano/vocal) demos will work for this pitch, but your recording quality (even for stripped-down demos) needs to be clean, clear, well balanced, and good enough to represent your Song well. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Label - No full critiques. NEW LISTING -- CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY SONGS with a Pop/Rock Edge and Male Vocals are needed by a hard working, Nashville-based Music Publisher for a charted artist working on his next album. Give them well-structured, radio-friendly Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs in the general stylistic wheelhouse of "Take Your Time" by Sam Hunt, "We Went" by Randy Houser, "Blue Bandana" by Jerrod Neimann, "Crash and Burn" by Thomas Rhett, etc., etc., etc. Quoting the source: "We're looking for songs that truly stand out and instantly engage the fans of the genre. The artist is influenced by Rock, Blues, Pop and Country. Tight melodic structures with good sectional contrast and big, memorable choruses are a must for this listing. Limit verses to 2 or 3 at the most, and keep in mind that songs with longer instrumental sections won't work. Melodies need to be current, competitive and feature big, driving, hit choruses like what we hear on modern country radio. Lyrical perspective is '20s to young '30s age range for this artist. Lyrics should be reflective of the modern country brand with a conversational, very visual, fresh, direct, honest, and emotionally compelling approach. No Bro-Country songs for this listing as Nashville flooded with them." Wow, couldn't have said it better! Please submit radio-worthy songs with infectious and original melodies, attention-grabbing hooks, and a killer Country chorus. Stripped-down acoustic demos are okay (if your songs are incredibly strong), but your recording quality (even for stripped-down demos) needs to be clean, clear, well balanced, and strong enough to represent your song well. Fully produced demos are always welcome too! Deals will be negotiated on a song-by-song basis directly with the Publisher. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. Looking for guitar-driven, uplifting, visual songs that tug the heartstrings, as well as fun, romantic songs with a fresh twist. We're not looking for Bro-Country for this artist (i.e., no tan lines, tank tops, party-to-the-wall tunes.) avoid lyrics that are abstract, generalized, poetic-sounding and overly repetitive -- and go for lyrics that are unique, conversational, visual, direct, honest and engage listeners at the heart level. Melodies need to be current and competitive. Nashville's most successful hit songwriters and publishers are pitching songs to this artist, which makes for a very competitive bar." Give them unique and commercially viable songs that sound like a radio hit, with captivating melodies, hooks, and lyrics. You'd be wise to have a really solid vocal performance to help sell them on cutting your song. Your demo quality needs to be competitive with songs being pitched on Music Row. NEW LISTING -- EMOTIONALLY MOVING, TRAILER-FRIENDLY SONGS with Female Vocals are needed by a Boutique Music Library that specializes in Movie Trailers. Please submit original, Down-to-Mid-Tempo Songs with lots of cinematic appeal, and sound like they could work well in certain kinds of Film Trailers, like the ones shown below. Listen carefully to the following trailers for the ethereal, moody, almost angelic qualities of the songs being used. That’s what this company means when they ask for Songs with “Cinematic Appeal.”

Suicide Squad Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI3hecGO_04

ELECTRONIC DANCE INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a Hollywood Music Supervisor for a Non-Exclusive Placement in a Big Budget Feature Film. She needs High-Energy, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that could be found on the same playlist as acts like Sick Individuals, Martin Garrix, Firebeatz, Calvin Harris, R3hab, etc., etc., etc. Please review the following references to get in the general ballpark of what they need:

“Prime” by Sick Individuals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHXlAIztyNI

“Helicopter” by Martin Garrix & Firebeatz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovDcLHa2L1o

“Burnin” by Calvin Harris & R3hab: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLRtClGyGgo

Quoting the source: “We really like the energy of ‘Prime’ by Sick Individuals, which works pretty well for the scene. Some phrases with Male or Female Vocals like ‘Let’s Go’ ‘Drop It’ ‘Come On’ etc., could work, or your members can submit pieces that are solely instrumental.”

Please submit heart-pounding, rhythmically intense Instrumentals that sound like a true EDM cut, with heavy Euro synths, great breakdowns, awesome builds, and a killer, pulsing beat. A repetitive melodic hook that’s immediately engaging will work really well for this pitch. As mentioned in the Music supervisor’s quote, your submissions can have well-placed vocal phrases to help add some additional intensity, but it’s not absolutely necessary!

Your submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists or tracks in any way shape or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

Quoting the Library: “We have a ‘Happiness’ project we are working on, looking for lots of fun and uplifting instrumentals for TV Commercials; some simple Ukulele, Xylophone, Piano, & Acoustic Guitar material with accompanying elements like Handclaps, Whistling, and simple Percussion. We are really looking for fun tracks that inspire and generally have a ‘feel good’ vibe.”

Please submit emotionally positive, inviting Instrumentals with authentic sounding acoustic instrumentation (see quote above), catchy melodies, and simple, yet memorable melodic hooks. We recommend submitting pieces that are 29.5 seconds long or 59.5 seconds long (including ring outs!) with with easy edit points, and a buttoned ending. If you want to submit longer pieces, you can, but you’d be smart to make them easily editable into 29.5 second versions and 59.5 second versions, which make them easier to use and more desirable to the editors and/or mixers who would eventually be laying the music into the commercials. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

TAXI Tip: This opportunity isn’t about showing off what a great composer you are, so much as nailing the happy-go-lucky, positive vibe. Creating a melody that’s better than the plethora of material already out there in this genre could be the thing that gets your piece to the top of the pile!

This Library offers an EXCLUSIVE, 50/50 split. You’ll get 50% of any applicable sync fees and 100% of the Writer’s share. The Publisher get 50% of any sync fees and 100% of the Publisher’s share. You must own or control the Master and Composition to submit to this pitch. Do NOT submit any pieces for this pitch that are already signed to any other libraries or publishers. Please submit one to three Instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than Friday, August 7th at 11:59pm (PDT). TAXI #U150807FI

They're looking hard to find current, full-length, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals in the general stylistic ballpark of acts like Pitbull, Enrigue Iglesias, Shakira, etc., etc., etc. Give them commercially appealing Pop Instrumentals that have all the engaging qualities of mainstream Pop music, with just the right amount of Latin flavor to give your track the fun, lively, Ad-friendly vibe they need. NEW LISTING -- SWAMPY INSTRUMENTALS CUES are needed by a very active Music Library that's feeding music directly to the editors of an extremely popular Reality TV Show. They're on the prowl for well-crafted, Down-to-Mid-Tempo Instrumentals Cues that you'd hear in shows like Swamp People, Moonshiners, Hillbilly Handfishin', Redneck Island, My Big Redneck Wedding, etc. Submit Cues that have a real-deal, backwoods vibe, with authentic sounding instrumentation like Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, Slide Dobro, Banjo, Fiddle, Harmonica, etc., etc., etc. Anything that sounds stiff, synthetic, of MIDI driven won't work for this pitch. Your Cues should stick to a central melodic motif while building the Cue with layers of additional instrumentation to keep it interesting as it progresses. You'd be wise to avoid anything that's frenetic, complex, or overly busy for this pitch. All submissions should be at least 2 minutes long. Easy edit points and buttoned/stinger endings are highly encouraged. This Company offers an EXCLUSIVE agreement with a 50/50 split. They’re looking hard to find original, authentic sounding Songs in All-Tempos in the general stylistic ballpark of Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Billie Holiday, Jo Stafford, Duke Ellington, etc., etc., etc. Take a careful listen to the following references they gave us:

“I Tried” by Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiJhieIcLD8

“East Of The Sun” by Frank Sinatra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_EPgmVaLWA

“There Are Such Things” by Frank Sinatra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIjJnpUvyts

“I’ll Be Seeing You” by Billie Holiday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDlKb2cBAqU

“Sugar” by Jo Stafford: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGrLY36hzas

“It Don’t Mean A Thing” by Duke Ellington: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDQpZT3GhDg

Quoting the source: “In regard to the ‘30s to ‘40s Songs, I totally understand that masters from that era are hard to come by. Authentic would be amazing, but finding NEW masters ‘in the style of’…that would be great as well.”

Please submit songs that sound like they’ve been plucked straight out of the era, with great, authentic sounding instrumentation, well-performed vocals, and an overall vibe that generally matches to the references. You’d be wise to avoid adding sound effects like synthetic pops, clicks, and scratches to give your submissions the old-timey feel. Instead, rolling off some top and bottom end could give your submissions the authentic sounding tone they need.

Universal lyrics that could work for a variety of scenes and storylines will work best for this pitch. Please avoid referencing any specific names, dates, places, and brands. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced bands in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for feel, texture, tone, and overall vibe. The Supervisor needs hypnotic, minimalist, Down-to-Mid-Tempo Songs in the general stylistic ballpark of acts like Beach House, Warpaint, Low, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the references below to get an idea of overall vibe this Supervisor needs:

“Lovelier Girl” by Beach House: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1VS3wm_YEY

“Billie Holiday” by Warpaint: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hZ4qiDEK8k

“2-Step” by Low: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYhIcT1nFsw

Quoting the source: “We really think something like ‘Lovelier Girl’ by Beach House will work perfectly, as long as the vibe can generally match the feel of the song. This is for background use, so lyrics are not as important.”

Please submit simple, lush, “Indie” sounding Songs that have a “mood-setting” quality, both musically and vocally. Reverb could be your best friend for this pitch, just don’t go too overboard. Lyric themes can be about anything you’d expect to hear in the genre, and due to the music being used as background source music, universal lyrics are NOT all that important for this pitch. But, you’d still be wise to avoid references to specific names, places, times, dates, brands, and profanity. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced acts or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

Please submit radio-friendly songs that are instantly memorable, with inviting melodies, relatable lyrics, and a chorus that can emotionally connect to a broad audience. NEW LISTING -- POP SONGS with Soulful Male Vocals are needed for a NON-Exclusive, $2,000 placement by the Music Supervisor of an upcoming Big Budget, Crime Drama Film. The Music Supervisor needs trendy, Down-Tempo Songs that could be found on the same playlist as the slower stuff from acts like; My Morning Jacket, Jonathan Wilson, Father John Misty, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the following references to get in the ballpark of what they need:

“Only Memories Remain” by My Morning Jacket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX-RDOp4XtE

“Slide By” by Jonathan Wilson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMJ5FbjNSDY

“Smiling And Astride Me” by Father John Misty: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg4xkW2Zt5A

Yep, we know the referenced artists would be considered Indie Rock acts by most people, but the referenced songs are pretty straight ahead Pop, with soulful vocals and maybe a dash of retro influence thrown in for good measure. Give this Supervisor passionate, moving songs that have an authentically soulful vocal delivery that sets a mood as soon as you hear it. Some simple, laid-back Guitar or Piano could work well for this pitch. Don’t go overboard with overly frenetic instrumentation that could get in the way of the film’s dialog. Emotion is the key for this pitch: your song is meant to enhance and add to the scene, not steal the show!

Imagine what you would hear coming from a jukebox in the background of a dimly lit bar when a couple is having their first slow, romantic dance together. That’s what they need! That’s not the actual scene we just described, but it makes the point well!

Since this is for background use, lyric themes aren’t all important for this pitch. But you’d be wise to keep them fairly universal, avoiding references to specific names, places, times, dates, brands, and profanity. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced acts or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and overall vibe. All submissions should be full-length songs. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

The estimated license fee for this is $2,000. This is a Direct-to-Music Supervisor pitch, so you’ll keep 100% ownership of your Master and Publishing rights, plus you’ll also get 100% of the sync fee and any applicable performance royalties. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. All songs will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No full critiques. NEW LISTING -- OLD SCHOOL-Style RHYTHM & BLUES SONGS with Male Vocals are needed by a Hollywood Music Supervisor for a NON-Exclusive (up to $2,000) placement in a Big Budget, Feature Film. The Music Supervisor needs groovin’ Down-to-Mid-Tempo Songs in the stylistic wheelhouse of greats like Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Al Green, etc., etc., etc. Take a listen to these classic songs to get an idea of the general vibe they need:

“(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” by Otis Redding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTVjnBo96Ug

Lyric themes can be about anything you’d expect to hear in old school R&B classics, and due to the music being used as “background source” music, universal lyrics are NOT all that important for this pitch. But, you’d still be wise to avoid references to specific names, places, times, dates, brands, and profanity. Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced acts or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and overall vibe. All submissions should be at least 2 minuets in length. 300 Placements: Any of Them Yours?

Dear Passengers,

Last Monday I had the CEO of a high-quality music library as my guest on TAXI TV. He told us that his company alone has had 300 placements for TAXI members in TV shows, films, and commercials in just the first half of 2015! Yes, 300 placements in a little over six and a half months!

That's just one of the many, many companies that sign TAXI members and place their music in TV Shows, Feature Films, Commercials and Video Games. Clearly, there are many thousands of TAXI member placements so far this year. While I'm extremely proud of our members and happy for their success, another success story I got via email points out why some people are successful and others are not. Read on...

Michael,

I hope you are having a great summer. As you know, the Road Rally class I teach each year is called "Building a Catalog Is A Marathon, Not a Sprint." I am very happy that is part of my philosophy on my journey in film and TV production music. In 2008 I was forwarded by TAXI to a leading Music Library for an Asian music request.

The cue has been pitched about 25 times. The Music Library just secured a placement for the cue in the new Bravo show, "Odd Mom Out." This is scripted show, so there is a $500, upfront sync fee for the placement. So, seven years after the forward [from TAXI] and deal being signed, the cue finally sees the light of day.

In 2008, I was also forwarded by TAXI to another really good Music Library. I recently had a placement in a production in France of another Asian cue I signed with them in 2012 — 3 years later!

I continue to hear composers lament the fact that a cue or two they signed to a library two years ago have not been placed. I guess they should attend my class!! -:)

My relationships with both libraries continue to grow. I add cues to both companies every year. I just signed a contract with one of them to produce a Doobie Brothers cue and an Eagles cue for a new collection. Both of those "favorable introductions" were made seven years ago through TAXI! The profit is in the relationship, not the transaction   another topic we discuss in my class at the Rally! Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that.

Best,
Chuck Schlacter

I can't even begin to count how many people there are who've never even tried to pitch their music, or the gargantuan number of people who have given up because they got a few pieces of music forwarded from TAXI, and then nothing happened... at least not yet!

Imagine how many other pieces of music Chuck Schlacter has signed with publishers and had placements for over those eight years! Imagine if he had never tried or gave up like so many other folks.

Here are how many cues Chuck has out there working for him because he didn't give up: 1364 cues in 18 different libraries! What if he'd given up when those early cues didn't get used early on?

Food for thought.

And make sure you check out Chuck's class at our upcoming convention   The TAXI Road Rally   that's FREE for every TAXI member and a guest of their choosing. November 5th-8th in Los Angeles. Registration opening soon! Watch your inbox.

Talk to you soon,
Michael

CUSTOM CRITIQUES

If you have material you would like critiqued without responding to a specific listing, you've come to the right place. Fill out the submission form with the song title(s) and author(s) as usual, but in place of the listing number write "CUSTOM" in capital letters.
Please include a note specifying the aspects you would like the listener to address.
For example, some members like to have their craft (lyrics, rhyme, structure, etc.) closely critiqued. Others want to know for which genre their writing is best suited (sorry, but we can't recommend specific listings for you to pitch to). Still others want a review of their photos, bios, package, etc.
The submission fee is $20 per song. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and make sure to specify if you want the CD back, or just a critique. Remember, these critiques are for your own edification and development and NOT targeted for a label or publisher, and therefore will not be forwarded.
