Songs should be extremely unique, yet still marketable. Stock melodies need not apply. Not looking for 'bro country' here either. No heading to the lake in my truck with the beer on ice, with my girl in her Daisy Dukes and her feet on the dash. I already have a solid catalog that I work with, so it really has to be a home run idea and storyline for me to pull the trigger." NEW LISTING -- CONTEMPORARY, TV COMMERCIAL-STYLE SONGS in a WIDE RANGE of GENRES, TEMPOS, and MOODS, with Male or Female Vocals are needed by the Owner of a Music Production Company that has a long list of placements in TV. Please review the following commercials to see the broad range of songs that could work for this pitch:

Beats By Dre Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rVjF_k8V10

Microsoft Surface Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QfnSoxyM3g

Honda Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEFEkKmVUsI

Nissan Rogue Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvBkwtGLURQ

Verizon Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwB7Dp7kl4Q

Please submit original, full-length Songs that can compliment a brand, with inviting melodies, attention-grabbing hooks, and a memorable, TV Commercial-friendly chorus. A catchy vocal performance, with a delivery that matches the mood of your song is a big plus! Lyrically, imagine how a product would make you feel, and see if your lyrics support that feeling. Lyrics that stick to a singular topic or mood should work best. Please avoid references to specific names, places, dates, times, brands, and profanity.

Contemporary, beat-driven EDM songs, Indie Pop Songs, and Singer/Songwriter or Indie Folk Songs often do well in the world of advertising. Uplifting, feel good, acoustic-based songs and “let’s go out and party” songs that are more beat-driven, seem to capture the lion’s share of what ad agencies gravitate toward. Maybe you should scan your catalog for those first!

TAXI Tip: Jingle-type songs are rarely used in advertising these days, so you’d be smart to avoid those.

All submissions should be at least 2 minutes long. Easy edit points and buttoned endings are preferred, but not absolutely necessary. Please DO NOT copy or rip off the referenced songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a broad guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Also, please avoid any material with unauthorized samples of other artists’ music, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed (Great sounding home recordings are fine).

This is an EXCLUSIVE deal, in perpetuity. You’ll keep 100% of your Writer’s share, and the Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher’s Share. NEW LISTING -- EPIC, ORCHESTRAL FILM TRAILER INSTRUMENTALS are needed by the Owner of a Music Production Company that has a long history of great placements. Please take a listen to the following playlist to get yourself in the high-bar stylistic ballpark of what they need. Note that after the first piece plays, other examples on the playlist (shown on the right side of the page) will automatically begin to play. The listing company has asked that you “listen to 90 minutes” of these trailer examples before you submit!

“Phantasm” Album by Audiomachine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrhWcUFn6DQ&list=PLa3mBPYc0eBbrA8hYjPgWsYe1B8XTHwUi

Quoting the source: “All music you send needs to meet the highest standards for Trailer Music. I will be looking at the instrumentation and articulations as well as texture of every orchestral instrument.”

Please submit Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that are structured like a typical Film Trailer, with 3 “acts” that build as the piece progresses. Your submissions should unleash a huge emotional impact, with big memorable strings, powerful brass, and bombastic percussion to create a feeling of intensity on a grand scale. Some non-lyrical vocal elements such as a choir can be included, however, please be sure to have a solely instrumental version on hand, as the Production Company will almost certainly request that if they are interested in your music. They’re also open to hybridized (Rock or Electro) accompaniment, but your submission(s) should be firmly rooted in Orchestral instrumentation.

Easy edit points and crescendos that lead to buttoned endings are strongly encouraged. Pieces that crescendo to a buttoned ending, followed by a codetta (as often used in Trailers) are okay to submit as well. Please DO NOT copy or rip off the referenced music in any way, shape, or form. Use it only as a general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and overall vibe. All submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length. Broadcast Quality is needed (Great sounding home recordings are fine).

This is an EXCLUSIVE deal, in perpetuity. You’ll keep 100% of your Writer’s share, and the Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher’s Share. Please make sure the Instrumentals you pitch to this opportunity are NOT already signed with any other Libraries or Catalogs. Quoting the source: “Only the very best can work for this pitch. Instrumentals can convey a variety of moods and genres, as long as the piece can musically and stylistically fit a brand.”

Please submit well-crafted, full-length Instrumentals that are emotionally compelling, with authentic instrumentation for the genre you choose to submit. Heartwarming, inspiring, and uplifting are just some of the emotions we can think of as we’re writing this. Spend some time watching lots of videos, and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised as to how many ways you can go for this pitch!

TAXI Tip: Your submissions can range from simple Tracks with just a Ukulele, handclaps, and a whistler; to small acoustic ensembles; and all the way up to fuller, Orchestral pieces. No matter which way you go, you’d be smart to stick to a single mood and don’t compose “scene changes” within them. Those Tracks are usually composed to picture. Also, you’d be smart to avoid bleak, depressing-sounding instrumentals as those are rarely used in Ad Campaigns.

All submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length, with easy edit points and buttoned endings are preferred, but not absolutely necessary. Please DO NOT copy or rip off the referenced music in any way, shape, or form. Use it only as a broad, general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and overall vibe. Give them slick, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals in the general stylistic wheelhouse of acts like Kavinsky, Miami Nights 1984, Mitch Murder, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the following references to get yourself acquainted with the type of Instrumentals they need:

“Wayfarer” by Kavinsky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArtophI2ORg

“Ocean Drive” by Miami Nights 1984: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLzjm9E1hwg

“Breeze” by Mitch Murder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hF5_o-lYDA

This is a Listing where you’re actually encouraged to use those oldie but goodie synth sounds that came out of your DX7, Oberheim, or Prophet 5! Enjoy the moment ;-)

Give them compelling Instrumentals that have a believable 1980’s vibe, but with modern recording quality. In other words, they’re not looking for vintage tracks that were done back in the day for this pitch. Your Instrumentals should be full-length (at least 2 minutes long), and can be done as either typical song arrangements or linear arrangements that stick to one motif, but use addition and subtraction of instrumental layers to keep it dynamically interesting from beginning to end.

Submissions should have memorable synth melodies, and tight, electronic, four-on-the-floor beats. Imagine what you’d hear while cruising along Pacific Coast Highway in your DeLorean! Vroooom, Michael J. Fox, Vroooooom!

Do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists or music in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for feel, texture, tone, and that cheesy 1980’s vibe. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal, so please be sure the Instrumentals you submit to this opportunity are NOT already signed with any other Libraries or Catalogs. Any sync fees will be split 50/50 with the Company. As the writer, you’ll keep 100% of the Writer’s share, and the Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher’s share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to submit. Please submit one to three Instrumentals online or per CD. No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 Instrumentals no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Wednesday, July 8th, 2015. TAXI #U150708NW

NEW LISTING -- CONTEMPORARY HIP-HOP INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a Major/Indie Record Label for several big artists on their roster. Give them Instrumentals that would appeal to the fans of artists like Rick Ross, Dj Khaled, Jeezy, etc., etc., etc. Quoting the source: "We want Hip Hop instrumentals with strong, hooky beats and arrangements. The chorus should stand out, with a really fresh approach." Please submit innovative Instrumentals that any Hip Hop star would kill to have. Okay, maybe not literally, but you get the idea!! Your tracks should have a super compelling beat, with great melodic ideas, solid hooks, and a really strong chorus. You can expect that the producer, artist, or both will end up co-writing the lyric, and you'll ultimately be entering into a co-write deal with them. We see that as a good thing. That's how you get into the artist's "camp," which is exactly where you want to be. Your overall production and recording quality needs to be competitive enough to get them excited about working with you. Please submit one to three full-length Instrumental Tracks online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a TAXI screener handpicked by the Label - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Wednesday, July 8, 2015. TAXI #Y150708HI

NEW LISTING -- Several BLUES-inspired GARAGE ROCK SONGS with Male Vocals are needed for NON-Exclusive Placements by the Music Supervisor of an Independent Film. Give them rockin’ songs in All-Tempos that could be found on the same playlist as acts like Gary Clark Jr., Patrick Sweany, The Sheepdogs, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the following references to get yourself in the stylistic ballpark of what this Supervisor is looking for:

"Bright Lights" by Gary Clark Jr.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFjMeOnqAPI

"Them Shoes" by Patrick Sweaney: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7licGkKp48

"The Way It Is" by The Sheepdogs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmG1Qjs7FpE

Quoting the source: “This will be used as background source music to play in a typical dive bar as the characters shoot pool and drink whiskey. We need both Up-Tempo and Down-Tempo options to play in a variety of scenes. It should sit in the background well as there will likely be a lot of dialog during these scenes.”

Please submit gritty, down ‘n’ dirty Songs with rockin’ guitar riffs, solid hooks, engaging melodies, and a beefy chorus. Your vocal should be solid and sound like it’s a good match for this type of rough-edged Rock. Lyric themes can vary, but should be something you’d typically hear in this genre. You’d be smart to avoid references to specific brands, places, dates, times, and names.

TAXI Tip: Because this is an Indie Film, the estimated license fee is only $100. But it’s notable that the Music Supervisor for this film also works on some really big TV shows, so this could be a great way for the Supervisor to get to know you and your music.

This is a Non-Exclusive, Direct-to-Music Supervisor pitch, so you'll keep 100% of the sync fee and any applicable performance royalties if you nail a placement in this film. Plus you'll also keep 100% of your Publishing and Master ownership. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. Please submit one to three Songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All Songs will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 songs no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Monday, July 6th, 2015. TAXI #U150706BR

NEW LISTING -- LAID BACK REGGAE SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are needed for a NON-Exclusive placement by the Music Supervisor of a star-studded Feature Film. She needs Down-to-Mid-Tempo Songs in the general stylistic ballpark of acts like Protoje, Damian Marley, Runkus, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the following references to get yourself in the vibe of what they need:

“Who Knows” by Protoje: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzqFmXZ8tOE

“Is It Worth It (Gunman World)” by Damian Marley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl0DDbIP9yg

“Victim” by Runkus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig_u7NthOL0

Quoting the source: “This will be for background source music playing in a beach shop in Daytona Beach. Songs can have some elements of Rap and Dub music, but should ultimately be rooted in Reggae Music.”

This should be an easy one to nail! And we rarely say that!! Imagine a Reggae Song that you’d hear playing in the background of a beach-y shop on “the strip,” where spring-breakers would go to buy suntan lotion; cheesy, touristy tank tops; and a hangover cure! That’s what this Supervisor needs.

Please submit Reggae songs that sound like the real thing, with instrumentation that sounds like humans played it, and not a computer. An authentic sounding Reggae vocal will make this Supervisor love your song! Some Electo Dub elements and Rapped vocals are welcome, but not absolutely necessary.

Since this is for background use, lyric themes aren’t all important for this pitch, but you’d be wise to keep them fairly universal and emotionally positive. Go for positive themes like, “Feelin’ alright,” or “It’s a great day,” kind of stuff. A lot of Reggae songs have political lyrics, but we don’t think those would play well in the background of a beach-y store filled with college kids. Please avoid specific names, places, dates, times, brands, and profanity in your lyrics. Please, do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for feel, texture, and tone. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

The estimated license fee for this is $1000. This is a Direct-to-Music Supervisor pitch, so you’ll keep 100% ownership of your Master and Publishing rights, plus you’ll also get 100% of the sync fee and any applicable performance royalties. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. All songs will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 Songs no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Friday, July 17th, 2015. TAXI #U150717RG

The "Stink" That Rubs Off From
Wanting to Make a Quick Buck...

Dear Passengers,

I was just looking at opportunities on some of the TAXI copycat sites, and one thing is obvious to me. Their "listings" are mostly broad, pretty vague, and give very little detail. Some simply say things like, "We need songs for chase scenes in all genres and all tempos."

Anybody with any knowledge of the industry knows that nobody would use a down-tempo love song for a chase scene. As a matter of fact, they've probably got an upbeat song from a famous artist "temped in," and they're looking for something very specific to replace it!

My educated guess as to why the TAXI copycats ask for all genres and all tempos is this: The broader the listings are, the more people will think they've got the "perfect thing." The more people that think that, the more submissions they get!

More Submissions = More Money for Them.
Considering most of the companies split their submissions fees with the companies or individuals that run the listings, they WANT more submissions, even if they're off-target!

We got to great lengths at TAXI to get as MUCH information as we possibly can for each of our listings. Yes, we often hear, "But there are so many things I need to get right to get a forward from a TAXI listing that it's frustrating."

Would you rather get little information, poor information, or lots of details that practically draw you a road map for what you need to submit? TAXI is of course, the company that does that latter of the three. And that's why so many of our members get REAL placements and build REAL relationships with industry professionals that matter!

It frustrates me that companies who don't seem to do a tiny fraction of the work TAXI does in vetting the sources/companies that run listings with them, and don't work hard to get as much detail as possible, give the entire industry a bad name.

Sorry to vent, but I don't love it when we work our butts off to bring you a great service with a killer track record, and the "stink" of some of the imitators taints the public's opinion of all companies that do what we do.

Thanks for reading this. I appreciate it. If you'd like to see some REAL listings that were carefully researched, please check this latest batch of updated Industry Listing!

Warmly,
Michael

P.S. And don't forget that all of our Instrumental Listings are now under the Instrumental category, no matter what genre they may be in!

CUSTOM CRITIQUES

If you have material you would like critiqued without responding to a specific listing, you've come to the right place. Fill out the submission form with the song title(s) and author(s) as usual, but in place of the listing number write "CUSTOM" in capital letters.
Please include a note specifying the aspects you would like the listener to address.
For example, some members like to have their craft (lyrics, rhyme, structure, etc.) closely critiqued. Others want to know for which genre their writing is best suited (sorry, but we can't recommend specific listings for you to pitch to). Still others want a review of their photos, bios, package, etc.
The submission fee is $20 per song. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and make sure to specify if you want the CD back, or just a critique. Remember, these critiques are for your own edification and development and NOT targeted for a label or publisher, and therefore will not be forwarded.
