I am proudly Canadian and enjoy writing and performing songs that strongly reflect Canadian perspectives and values. That said, I have a weighted lifetime history of listening to historical and current American, world and classical music.
I perform a wide array of self-penned and cover songs in multiple genres, including Canadiana, folk, country, rock, pop & songs for kids. I especially enjoy taking a song that was written in one genre and working it into a completely different genre while still being true to the song. I also enjoy writing and playing moody instrumentals and have a varied palette of instruments.
I come from a long line of songwriters. Thomas Oliphant is credited as writing the English lyrics to the Scottish Christmas carol Deck the Halls in 1862. Thomas wrote a lot of his own music and lyrics but he also translated foreign songs. In cases where he didn’t necessarily know the language of the song's origin, he often made up his own lyrics based solely on what the music brought to his mind. In addition to writing and performing his own music in royal courts, Thomas translated roughly 400 songs for them. True poetic license? Fa la la la la, la la la la !!!
