VanNessa Lorretta Perry

VanNessa has been singing since she was 5 years old from the children's choir to the junior high school choir, to high school & college choirs. That set the standard for her musical development. VanNessa has always had a low speaking voice, so she started out at 2nd alto, but found out that she could stretch up to 2nd soprano with ease. It was at her early years that she tried her hands at songwriting and has been writing ever since.

What helped VanNessa find her own style after years of being told in gospel choirs that her voice was too plain and that she "needed to put something on that" meaning that she was singing too straight and that she needed to do those vocal calisthenics that is always expected. However, she found it was easier for her to just croon and sing it straight. Because of this, she rarely led songs in the gospel genre, but she was great at singing background as she was able to blend with just about anybody and add the vocal seasoning that was required. That was truly her lane.

She also found that she could write. In high school, VanNessa got into writing poetry and found that with poetry, it just flowed out of her pen. To translate that into songs was a smooth transition, and she has not looked back. With concentrating on subjects that have an important meaning to her gives VanNessa the impetus for writing, and is also what she enjoys, and hope others will enjoy as well.
