Co-Written Compositions:

Business

ASCAP and BMI writers can collaborate on compositions with each other even though they are members or affiliates of different organizations.

In cases where an ASCAP writer and a BMI writer co-write a song, the publishing interest of the ASCAP writer must be placed in an ASCAP publishing company and the BMI writer's publishing interest placed in a BMI publishing company.

Each writer-publisher pair will receive royalty payments from its respective performing right organization. The same arrangement would occur if ASCAP or BMI writers co-wrote a song with a SESAC writer.

Each publisher's share must match its corresponding writer's share. For example, if an ASCAP and BMI writer have a 75%-25% writer split on a song, the ASCAP publisher would have 75% of the publishing and the BMI publisher 25%. In this example, ASCAP would pay 75% with BMI paying 25%.
