Although Scott grew up in a musical family, it was his formative years in high school that really enabled him to carve out a niche in the business. During his H.S. days, Scott began playing with some R&B and funk bands and took a liking to acts such as Brothers Johnson, Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire. "I'm the second youngest of seven kids," Scott explained, "and all my older sisters were into Motown. So when I was just a little kid, they were all dancing around the room to the Temptations and the Jackson 5, so I kinda grew up on that kind of music. By the time I became a teenager and they moved out, it was just natural for me to keep listening to R&B music. When I first heard Louis Johnson play bass I couldn't believe how he got that sound, so I picked up the bass and started playing."

By the time he reached his twenties, Urquhart (pronounced Urk-heart) was already playing with several local bands and getting professional session work. When he realized that the original music being written by his bandmates wasn't all that good, he took pen in hand and became a songwriter. "For me, success was a slow, evolutionary thing, but my big break came when I got hired by Narada Michael Walden. He hired me as an arranger/programmer/songwriter. That happened in 1997."

Getting his first pro full-time gig allowed Scott to drop the day job he held onto for 15 years (he was a construction worker who built homes) and turn his attention to a career in music.

"My gig with Michael Walden was great because it allowed me to write for other artists such as Lisa Fisher, Ray Charles and Tevin Campbell. I don't think I had anything released by those artists but eventually, the Temptations came through. One night, Narada gave me a track and told me to write a melody and lyrics for it. He didn't tell me that there was any kind of rush to get it done. At 10 a.m. the next morning, he calls back telling me that the Temptations were there waiting to hear the song. I walked in and they were all there waiting for me because I was the only one who knew how the song went! That was the first song they recorded for the album, Phoenix Rising, and it was also the first single--called 'Stay.' The CD went platinum."

With a modicum of success under his belt, Scott opened 2K Productions, a digital recording studio that he uses to develop and record new, unsigned artists that he discoveres. My next queston was obvious: Having achieved success on his own as a writer, arranger, programmer, producer and studio owner--why join TAXI?

"Well," Scott quiped, "one song does not a songwriter make! A song can never earn too much money. I was under the naïve impression that after I got my hit song out there, the phone would start ringing. But it didn't work that way. So I figured I would have to find another avenue and keep doing this myself. I heard about TAXI through a writer friend of mine who showed me a copy of their listings. I immediately thought that I had material that fit the listings I saw, so I joined. TAXI has been another arm to the industry for me. Without TAXI, I would never have gotten the song placements for these television shows. I now have a relationship with Paramount and with a publishing company where I can just call them up when I have something new and then send it over. I wasn't able to do that before TAXI. I make contacts, I get songs placed and I make money. So, sure it helps!

Scott is quick to point out that TAXI is for everybody--including those who have achieved success. "If you're not making a s**tload of money, TAXI can help. Diane Warren and Babyface don't have to join. But TAXI is definitely not just for beginners. They really are the A&R vehicle. They do get your songs out there, for real."
