Galway’s Malcolm Lally has fast become a name to watch out for among Ireland’s diverse array of talented songwriters. He secured his radio debut with the track ‘Christmas Time (Baby Are You Mine)’, which took home the first prize of the Christmas FM National Radio Competition in Ireland. It went on to receive national radio airplay each holiday season.
While pushing his own personal boundaries of what’s possible in the singer-songwriter arena, his originality is not without a wide-ranging backdrop of influences. Malcolm cites rock and pop as his main genres of influence and is mainly inspired by guitar-based songwriters such as Dave Matthews, John Mayer, James Mercer (of The Shins) and more recently, Ben Howard, Ed Sheeran and Irish songwriters Declan O’Rourke and Dermot Kennedy.
Additionally, Malcolm takes influence from musical theatre and film composers, with the likes of Ludovico Einaudi, James Newton Howard, Hans Zimmer and Yann Tiersan making their way into his sonic palette. What binds this all together is his penchant for deeply emotive soundscapes and melancholic tendencies, which is reflected in his morose and nostalgic melodies.
Growing up with musical parents, Malcolm dabbled with music from a very young age, with his foray into music beginning with the piano at the age of 6. He then moved onto the trumpet and by 11, he had picked up the guitar and taught himself the ropes after some initial guidance from his father.
From a young age, he performed with various bands but quickly discovered that it was songwriting, rather than performing, that drew him in. Today, he finds himself leaning further into refining his compositions, chipping away at the craft of writing emotionally provocative songs that resonate deeply with the listener.
Malcolm is currently sitting on two official releases. His debut single ‘Vacation’ premiered in February 2019. Christmas Time (Baby Are You Mine’) racked up over 100,000 streams in the Christmas of 2019 and 2020. He has also landed a number of final stage placements for the UK Songwriting Competition in recent years. Going forward, he is preparing the release of his next track, ‘CALIFORNIA’, the lead single from his debut E.P.
