They want to hear ORIGINAL or PUBLIC DOMAIN pieces; please do NOT send in covers of copyrighted songs. Compositions should have a soothing, relaxing feel. They prefer acoustic guitar or piano (including soft electric piano) as lead instruments in the piece. A flute or warm woodwind sound could also work. They're NOT looking for solo arrangements, so fill out your track with lush pads or soothing counterpoint lines before getting too far in. The demographic ranges from 18-34 yr. olds. Artists must have a full length recorded CD and if selected, will have MAJOR exposure to millions of listeners and new fans. They will also be the FEATURED and ONLY Artist on the show and Big-FM will dedicate an entire webpage on their site for the duration of the week your feature show is aired! These pages receive thousands of hits per day! The show does NOT accept unsolicited material, you can ONLY submit through TAXI. Broadcast quality is a must (excellent sounding home recordings are fine). If you're submitting a CD, make sure it's your full-length release, per the above instructions. "I Just Want to Get My Music Out There."
Dear Passengers,
When I ask musicians what their goal is, the majority of them answer, "To get my music out there."
The reason I'm bringing this up is that I spoke to an old friend of mine yesterday, and the conversation broke my heart! I've known this guy since 1978. I engineered some sessions for him back in the day when I lived in South Florida.
Thirty-four years later, and he's STILL trying to find his way in the music business at fifty-some years old. He's pretty intelligent, but he's never really kicked his music career into gear. I couldn't stop thinking about him last night (or this morning!).
His problem is common. He just wants to "get his music out there," but he's never had a plan for how he could accomplish that goal. In my opinion, his goal is pretty vague and not specific enough!
I know, I know!!! Musicians are creative people, and most aren't good business people. At the risk of sounding harsh, I think the "I'm not good at the business stuff" defense is a long overused cop out. I think that's certainly the case in today's music industry.
I called my friend when I got to work today and asked him if I could use him anonymously as the protagonist in one of my emails, and he agreed. Thanks "Tom!"
Breaking down his possibilities, these are what I see as his options:
Playing live: Not terrible, but it's unlikely that he could earn significant money without pretty constant touring. At his age, doing covers at local venues is the most realistic option. Tom says he's not good at "promoting himself" or booking his own gigs. Cross off playing live as Tom's main income stream.
Record deal: Not a lot of labels are interested in signing acts who are in their fifties, with no fan base, no significant sales of their music, and good, but dated sounding songs.
Film and TV music: Tom can do it without leaving home, but he's worried his studio is too limited — ProTools, a few plug-ins, a couple of decent microphones... you know the drill, right? He can't do big orchestral tracks, because that's not his thing. But he is a solid singer/songwriter and an excellent guitar player. He just needs to update his style to sound more current.
But Tom still has no plan, and no specific goal. Left to his own doing, he could procrastinate and continue to make excuses.
Excuse #1: "The labels rip off musicians and they don't sign people my age anyway."
Excuse #2: "I don't have the right gear."
Excuse #3: "I can't even listen to the crap they call music on the radio any more. If that's what I need to do, then I don't want to be in the music industry."
Here's what I heard between the lines.
"I'm scared of learning or trying anything new."
"I'm afraid to fail."
"This sounds like work."
Like many creative people, Tom has long held the belief that musicians, painters, writers, etc. are either talented or not, and lucky or not. It's true that some talent and a little luck play a role, but let's be honest — most of all, it takes work.
It also takes a specific goal and a plan for reaching that goal. Tom's new goal is to create current, contemporary sounding singer/songwriter songs for Film and TV.
Great plans are like great novels, songs, and movies. They have a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning for Tom is to survey the landscape and learn what kind of music is needed that could intersect with his skill set.
I played Tom this song and asked him if he could do anything like it in his home studio.
Morgan Taylor Reed's song, "Simply Human."
"Of course!" he exclaimed.
"Great, because there are dozens of songs like this used in TV shows every month. This one was used in an episode of 'House.' So your beginning is to go to Tunefind.com and find as many songs that have already been used in TV shows that you could have written and recorded.
Study the lyrics and melodies to look for commonality. What makes the melodies and song structure sound more contemporary than what you've done? What topics and emotions are covered in the lyrics? Learn what it means to have universal lyrics in your songs... you know, lyrics that express a single emotion or cover a single topic but let the script and the dialog tell the full story. Let your music support the story with emotion. Are you getting the picture?" I asked.
"Yeah, but what's my middle?"
I told him to write and record a simple guitar/vocal song every other day for a year.
"That's a lot of work!" he said.
"Really? Writing songs and recording guitar/vocal versions at home is a lot of work for you?"
"Doing 180 great songs in a year sounds like it is."
"Did I say they all needed to be great? Let's say that only ten percent of them are great… that means you'll have 18 songs you can pitch to shows like House during the next year."
"Okay, so that's the middle of my plan. What's the end?"
"Pitching them!" I exclaimed.
"And how do I pitch them?"
"Tom... who are you talking to! What's the name of my company?"
"TAXI," he responded. "Are you going to give me a free membership?"
Define your goal. Make a plan. Don't let the "what ifs" stop you before you start. Ready, Fire, Aim!
Talk to you soon,
Michael

Submission Policies
- You must be a current member of TAXI to submit your material. If you're not already a member, click here to find out how to join.
- The Submission Fee is $5.00 per song for every listing (unless otherwise noted). Listings that ask for up to three songs per listing would be $5, $10, or $15 based on whether you are submitting 1, 2, or 3 songs to that listing.
- You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the proper amount of postage with each submission if you would like to receive a critique and/or have your tape/CD returned. Enclosing one SASE with a several submissions doesn't work. Multiple submissions go into a different bins or to different screeners as soon as we receive them, and are returned to you at different times.
- We notify you by postcard if forwarded for any listing--No SASE needed for forward notification.
- Late submissions slow everything down. We are very pleased to have significantly improved our listing turnaround time. We can't accept late submissions and stay efficient.
- You must use your official TAXI Music Submission Form with the BarCode information at the top. Roll up your burritos so that Bar Code is exposed and readable without having to unwrap or re-wrap your burrito. It's OK if your check covers the bar code, because we take it out before scanning the bar code anyway.
- Those of you who have seen the music room know what kind of volume we handle. All of these little rules help us to serve you better.
- Miguel's Tape Burrito
(Always filling, Low Cal, Non-fat, Never delicious)
Place the submission form face-down with the top pointing away from you. Place the lyric sheets, envelopes, etc. on top of it in the same fashion. Place the cassette near the bottom of the sheets, and roll it all up from bottom to top. The end result will give you a tape burrito that will be 8 1/2 inches wide, and have the girth of a cassette. The submission form will end up on the outside, and your name and the listing number will be readily visible for our data entry people. No folding of anything! Please tuck your checks in the rubber bands so they are easily found without unraveling the whole enchilada.

REMINDER!!
REMEMBER TO PLEASE INCLUDE A SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE WITH YOUR SUBMISSION IF YOU WANT A CRITIQUE BACK.

CUSTOM CRITIQUES
If you have material you would like critiqued without responding to a specific listing, you've come to the right place. Fill out the submission form with the song title(s) and author(s) as usual, but in place of the listing number write "CUSTOM" in capital letters.
Please include a note specifying the aspects you would like the listener to address.
For example, some members like to have their craft (lyrics, rhyme, structure, etc.) closely critiqued. Others want to know for which genre their writing is best suited (sorry, but we can't recommend specific listings for you to pitch to). Still others want a review of their photos, bios, package, etc.
The submission fee is $20 per song. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and make sure to specify if you want the tape (or CD) back, or just a critique. Remember, these critiques are for your own edification and development and NOT targeted for a label or publisher, and therefore will not be forwarded.
